According to the World Semiconductor Forum, on October 12, Samsung Electronics Solutions (DS) is conducting a comprehensive restructuring of its LED business. As part of the restructuring plan, Samsung has made a strategic decision to completely withdraw from its LED business.
The team was previously responsible for the production and sales of products such as LEDs for TVs, LEDs for smartphone flash lights, and LED modules for automotive headlights.
It is reported that although the LED business can bring Samsung about 2 trillion won (about 10.56 billion yuan) in sales each year, Samsung Electronics believes that the business has lost its competitive advantage and decided to divest it in order to focus more on more promising core areas such as power semiconductors and micro LED businesses.
It is expected that the LED business department staff may be reassigned to power semiconductor, micro LED, memory, foundry and other business departments. Samsung entered the LED lighting business as early as 2012 through the merger of Samsung LED Company, but in recent years, due to the intensified competition of low-priced products, it is difficult to guarantee profitability, so it decided to strategically withdraw from the business.
In addition, Samsung Electronics is considering breaking the traditional model of unified management by the headquarters and delegating personnel assessment authority to the production line, aiming to further improve the organization's operational efficiency and promote the company's overall business development.
